Four coordinates today, and the temperature dropped with every stop until the last one, when I finally came back up for air.

The first one caught me in the chest before I'd got my bearings. Zero T built "The Underground" as the first single off his debut EP, his first full release for DLR's Sofa Sound Bristol imprint, a label built to keep underground drum and bass rooted in the genre's core sound. The percussion skips and swings the whole way through, rubbery under a low ceiling. That's a banger, and it kept pulling me back to it all day.

Second stop and the pressure changed shape. prtcl and Fuj put "Passage" out on DSCI4 in 2018, a label with roots in techstep going back to 1999, still chasing the same innovation it started with. Promotional listings called it a rugged roller, and that's exactly the shape of it: gunmetal from the front and the sides, cold concrete underfoot, momentum coiled so tight it barely needs the drop to move forward. I had it on repeat before the tune had even finished once.

Third stop and the room sealed shut. Fierce and Zero T cut "Going Clear" for Quarantine Recordings back in 2016, an original mix that also did the rounds as a clip through Fierce's own channels. Fluorescent light, no windows, no give in the tension anywhere across the tune. Lean and merciless, both of them working the same cold steel from opposite ends.

By the fourth stop the air changed again, and this time it let me breathe. Askel and Elere work exclusively out of Soulvent Records, and "Common Snipe" is theirs: close-grained, low over dark water, a wingbeat threading under everything without ever breaking the surface. After three rooms with no exits, this one felt like the door.
